Your New Website: Don’t Launch It and Forget It!

You’ve launched your new website! You’re both excited and relieved. Now you’re looking forward to just sitting back and enjoying the ride. Right? Not exactly.

Website maintenance is very important for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and website visibility. Invest in your investment! You’ve put time and money into building a superb website, now make the most out of it!

You wouldn’t buy a business and not maintain it, letting the windows rot or the roof leak, would you? Keep that in mind when you think about your virtual business (your website) it requires frequent maintenance as well. Ask yourself these questions on a monthly or quarterly bases to keep your website fresh and optimized.

Is your website mobile-friendly?

In this world of smart phones and tablets, a mobile-friendly website is a must! Your website should be just as visually appealing and function just as well on mobile devices and it would on a desktop. If it doesn’t, you are limiting your visitors. That’s a total bummer! Search engines agree, they are not in favor of outdated websites either. Not having a mobile website will hurt your ranking.

Are your photos fresh?

Companies spend a lot of time and money to get great photos, and rightfully so, photos play a key role on any website. Take new photos frequently (professional or armature) and post them to your photo gallery, add them to your pages, use them on your blog posts.  As a final step, optimize those beautiful photos for search engines by adding a title, description and ALT text.

Successful businesses are ever-changing, growing, re-branding, and adding new products or upgrading services.  As things change in your business, those changes should be reflected on your website. If you’ve added a new service, add it to the appropriate page. Then blog about it. You get the picture. Then when a potential customer is searching for that service, they can find your business.

Updating your site frequently is great for SEO too! Search engines send more traffic to sites that are active, not stagnant. Visit each page of your site often and review the content. Ask yourself what could be added or updated. Don't forget to check that hyperlinks are correct, and forms are functioning.

Does your blog have a recent blog or two?

Is your most recent blog post several months old? Then it’s time to put on your thinking cap and start writing! If you have a blog or news section on your website, you should make a point to add to it consistently. It’s a great way to inform your followers, set your business apart as an industry leader, and it’s great for SEO.

If your business doesn't have "newsworthy" updates, consider a blog strategy using evergreen content.  Creating content that answers questions, solves your customers problems, or gives them a solution that is not dated and is always relevant is a great way to add new content to your website.

Is the design fresh?

Compare your design and look to other sites in your industry? Is it time for a makeover? A fresh look can catch the eye of web users. As you update your brochures, logo and brand…don’t forget to update your website. A great website should reflect who you are!
